The New Nigerian Scam: Filipino SMS Crooks

An interesting twist on your everyday Nigerian scam: in the small kingdom of Brunei, Fillipino SMS scammers are causing some havoc, according to this story.

A local couple received an SMS that they had won a large sum of money at a "four-digit mobile phone competition". The message had then gone on to instruct them to deposit money amounting to B$1,562 to an account in the Philippines through a money transfer agent in the capital. The couple sold their car to find the requested amount of money. Well, nothing much happened after that...
