New figures show the Chinese love SMS

China will account for one-third of the world's short messages sent by mobile telephone this year, nearly a 10 per cent jump over 2002, state press reported on Monday, according to an article in Australia's ABC.net.

"China Mobile, the country's largest provider of mobile phone services, estimates this year's short messaging service volume will hit some 170 billion messages, the Shanghai Youth Daily reported.

Short messages have proven hugely popular in China due to their very low cost.

Last year, China saw the volume of short messages rocket 25 per cent, compared to 7 per cent growth in 2001 and just 1 per cent in 2000.

With 250 million subscribers China is the world's largest cellular phone market."
