New technology promises end to tunnel cut-off
Orange claims to be the first to unveil new technology which promises to end the problem of mobile phone calls cut short when a train enters a tunnel, reports Ananova.
"The company has conducted tests to find out how to provide a signal throughout the length of even the longest tunnel, by placing a base station near the mouth, with an aerial aimed inside.
It is also conducting trials to allow passengers on cross-Channel ferries to use their mobile phone within the ship and is talking to a consortium investigating how to provide coverage inside the Channel Tunnel."
