Art of letter writing being killed off by Internet in China

From favorite journalist Aloysius Choong, reporting for Asia CNet.com: "In China, the art of letter writing is being killed off by mobile phones and the Internet.

"Sociologists estimate some 90 percent of people under the age of 30 have stopped writing letters, while only some of those above 45 continue doing so. The same, of course, has been happening in the rest of the world, where old-style letters are usually just bills.

According to Prof. Qian Ning, a noted sociologist with prestigious Yunnan University and interviewed by the China Daily, "more young men are connecting with each other through phones, e-mails or mobile phone short messages. If things go on like this, hand-written letters will die out very soon".

True, hand-written letters may be on the way out, but thanks to e-mail and texting, people are definitely writing more than ever before.
