AIDS monitoring by SMS
In South Africa, a campaign will soon launch on a test basis, to ensure that HIV-positive patients are reminded to take their medication at regular intervals. The project is to become a basis for other clinics, where HIV-positive counsellors trained on the use of anti-retrovirals, are each assigned 40 people who are HIV-positive.
Each counsellor has a cellphone and through an initiative called the «Cell Life Project», they can SMS data and queries to a central computer monitored by doctors at the University of Cape Town.
