Blackmail by SMS

A businessman received an SMS saying: "I can make your problems go away" from an official of the South African Revenue Services (Sars) in East London.

Over time he received 240 text messages, the last of which said he must pay R20 000 or the deal would be called off.

The businessman had called the police and a sting was set up for the day he was to hand over the money. The Sars official was arrested. [IOL]
