Text Messaging women vigilantes help police nab highjackers
In Johannesburg, a couple hijacked in their car, were delivered by the police, following text messages sent by a network of "grannies" (woman of esteem in the community), who helped police nab a suspect within an hour.
"The co-operation between Alexandra's "grannies" and the police is part of a e-blockwatch cellphone network. The women and their support groups are continuously on the lookout for suspects. Information is then passed on to the ee-blockwatch control centre via SMSs." [news24hour.com]
