Cell phones on "manner mode"
Not only are ringing cell phones (understandably) forbidden when riding on Japanese public transportation, but as of September 15, Toky and Kanto train passengers will only be allowed to send e-mail messages and surf the mobile Internet on phones set to silent or "manner mode", according to Asahi.com, though some think it'a stretch to say tapping on your keyboard annoys other passengers.
And passengers will be asked to turn off their mobile phones at all times when near priority seats for the elderly or handicapped as use of cellphones could harm passengers fitted with pacemakers.
