Telcos kick off SMS campaign to honour Dr M

Celcom and TMTouch kicked off yesterday a campaign to enable their customers to pay tribute to Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad by SMS through Sept 18. All the messages will be documented into a CD-rom and a book, which will be presented to him.

"Dr Mahathir has done a lot for the country and it is right for us to express our gratitude to him", said to Deputy Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin.

Those wishing to pay tribute to the Prime Minister will have to type "PM" and then send the message to short code 26376. Following this, they will receive a response and be required to type their tribute, including their name and address, reports The Star.

A portion of the proceeds from the campaign will be donated to the Malaysian non profit organisation, Pertubuhan Anak-Anak Yatim Malaysia (Peyatim). A total of 2.5 million messages are expected to be sent during the campaign which will last a month and a half.

This follows Telekom South Africa's birthday celebration of Nelson Mandela by text messaging July 18, where all proceeds were to be donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation for children's rights.
