Threats and extortion by SMS, a growing concern

The Scotland Police warns that threats and extortion are rising sharply as extortionists and bullies and even professional criminals exploite the anonymity of cell phones, according to an article in The Sunday Herald. The police also complains that any attempt to track down a caller registed with a given mobile number, is hampered by the telecom companies which take months to respond to an identity request and users of pay-as-you-go phones can't be tracked down as they are not registered at all.
