Telecoms suspected in spreading false earthquake warning by SMS

According to the The Manila Times, The House Committee on Public Information (Philippines) will look into "text rumors" and "spam texts" which circulated through messages warning of a strong earthquake that would hit Metro Manila Thursday and caused panic.

"Text messages and e-mails warning of a strong earthquake caused panic Thursday despite a statement issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology that these predictions had no scientific basis.

The committee chair, Rep. Gilbert Remulla of Cavite, said these rumors via text messaging could be part of a scheme by telecommunication companies to raise more profits".
