SMS donation campaign mainly for orphans and children
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Malaysia would like to extend a helping hand to Indonesia in caring for the reported tens of thousands of children orphaned following the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh.
He said he came to know about the orphans after reading news reports stating that Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had banned 35,000 such orphans from being adopted by outsiders.
"He (Susilo) said Indonesia will take the responsibility in taking care of them and I believe that we, too, can extend our help to the Indonesians," he told reporters after launching a donation drive for tsunami victims via the SMS, spearheaded by the Yayasan Kajian dan Strategi Melayu, here.
Apart from the foundation, the SMS donation campaign mainly for orphans and children is being jointly organised by the Tabung Amanah Muhibbah, Umno Puteri and the Tabung Kemajuan Satria (Tangkas), whose members comprise ex-army and police officers and personnel.
