Police collect cell phones for seniors

In yet another cell phone recycling scheme, the Shelby Township Police Department in Michigan is collecting used and unwanted cellular telephones for distribution to senior citizens as a safety tool, reports the Town News.

"We have had about 500 phones brought in to us," said Shelby Township police Sgt. Ken Cazabon. "We turn them over to Macomb Senior Services and they check them, match them up with chargers, clear out the phone's old memory, then pass them out to seniors in the community."

As cell phones continually are updated, resale values are typically low, but recycling phones for public safety is a very attractive alternative to just throwing a phone away."
