Halloween. Cell phone tips and costumes

With Halloween around the corner and just like last year, U.S. Cellular is offering tips and free safety kits to keep in touch on Halloween. For instance: -- While planning a trick-or-treat route, parents can pre-program the cell phone with updates to send from certain points along the way. -- A cell phone's alarm clock is another great tool for parents. When they set a curfew Halloween night, parents can set their kids' cell phone alarm clock to give them a reminder when it's time to head home. -- Emergency phone numbers can be pre-programmed into the phone so that children can get help quickly. [via Moberly Monitor-Index] 7289743541817276.JPG 2352583157282247.JPG While we're at it, last year, Engadget had their own idea. Their suggestion: "Pretend you're not home and dress up all of your gadgets in little costumes like these ones and have your own little party". Or of course, there's the 2004 Japanese classic of dressing like an actual Keita or the equally elegant US version which is inflatable. Our recommendation for this year? dress up as a paparazzi! permalink (October 14th, 2005)

U.S. Cellular to provide free Halloween safety kits

trickortreat.jpg To help parents ensure a safe Halloween, U.S. Cellular will give away free Halloween safety bags at local stores beginning Oct. 27, while supplies last, reports Ardrmoreite.com. "Bags will include glow sticks and other safety items, and of course, carrying a cell phone while trick-or-treating provides additional security and peace of mind. "While planning a trick-or-treat route, parents can pre-program the cell phone with updates to send from certain points along the way. By filing messages such as "Meet at Main and State" or "B home in 15" in the "saved" text folder, trick-or-treaters only have to press "send" to deliver the text message. A cell phone's alarm clock is another great tool for parents. When they set a curfew Halloween night, parents can set their kids' cell phone alarm clock to give them a reminder when it's time to head home. " permalink (October 22nd, 2004)

Bernie Madoff Ringtone

133830.jpg A funny piece from CityLife last week.
quotemarksright.jpgBernie Madoff might not be able to leave his apartment, but now you can take him with you wherever you go! We're very happy to present you with the very first Bernie Madoff ringtone, which in a violation of everything Bernie holds dear, we're giving away for free. The ringtone features a few phrases from a talk Madoff gave in 2007, set, appropriately enough, to the theme music from the horror movie Halloween.quotesmarksleft.jpg

Ghosts of Liberty - pervasive game

northend.jpg Ghosts of Liberty ’ is yet another mobile/pervasive game (played in Boston) and designed by Urban Interactive . [via pasta&vinegar] This Halloween season, Urban Interactive will haunt Boston's historic North End with the new ‘augmented reality’ game, Ghosts of Liberty. Combining elements of mobile gaming with theme-park style immersion and improvisational actors, this hair-raising experience will redefine "a night on the town" for adventurous Bostonians. Players roam through the lamp-lit alleys of Boston's North End, following a trail of ghostly messages to track a mysterious enemy of the state. A cell phone weaves electronic gameplay and live action into the nocturnal ambiance, as participants race against the clock to solve riddles, discover hidden items, and interact with characters both real and digital." permalink (October 27th, 2006)

Phone revolution makes Africa upwardly mobile

A wonderful article from The Times, on the remarkable growth of the African cell phone market, expanding nearly twice as fast as Asia’s. ... "South Africa with its booming economy, is the continent’s biggest mobile phone market, with nearly 25 million subscribers, then come Nigeria, Egypt and Morocco. But it is in less-developed countries that the statistics are most startling. The Democratic Republic of Congo, population 60 million, has 10,000 fixed telephones but more than a million mobile phone subscribers. In Chad, the fifth-least developed country, mobile phone usage jumped from 10,000 to 200,000 in three years. A lack of electricity has not proved a hindrance: roadside vendors charge mobile phones with car batteries. As the signal coverage expands, cheaper phones and calls fuel growth. A location-aware cellphone

se.gif Sony Ericsson's latest idea is to sell phones which automatically change the way they behave, depending on the time, date and place, reports New Scientist. "For example, the wallpaper display on the screen shows pumpkins when the phone's calendar sees the date is Halloween, and Christmas puddings on December 25th. Network roaming, or GPS, can tell a phone what country it is in, so the ring-tone might change to a reggae tune as the plane touches down in Jamaica, for example. A restaurant could use short-range Bluetooth signals to deliver the specials menu direct to the phone's screen, and a cinema or church could use Bluetooth to switch it to silent mode. Stockbrokers could enable an option to display the latest share prices every 10 minutes and golfers could use continually updated weather forecasts for wallpaper. Priority coding lets some automated controls override user settings." Read the location-aware cellphone patent here. permalink (August 3rd, 2005)
