Cheap new digital tunes available to download

lplaycomlogo.gif The established retail website Play.com has announced that it will be offering a selection of cheap, unrestricted music to download. Mobile Marketing News reports.

"The move could spark a price war between rival sites - good news for mobile users who like to download music and ringtones on to their phones.

The service promises to have singles costing just 65p - 14p cheaper than rival Apple's all-conquering iTunes site.

For those with longer attention spans, albums will be put on the store's virtual shelves, costing £1 less than at iTunes.

Websites, such as iTunes, traditionally sell downloads with a code preventing them from being copied onto different devices. This will not be the case with Play.com's wares.

EMI has signed up to the new service, which hopes to attract other big hitters including Sony, Warner and Universal."

At Starbucks, Songs of Instant Gratification

01impulse.190.jpg New technology that allows coffee patrons to download the music playing in Starbucks stores to their iPhones is just the beginning of a wave options for impulse purchases. The New York Times reports.

Starting tomorrow at certain Starbucks stores, a person with an iPhone or iTunes software loaded onto a laptop can download the songs they hear over the speakers directly onto those devices.

The price will be 99 cents a song, a small price, Starbucks says, to satisfy an immediate urge.

“For the customer it’s an instant gratification,” said Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment. “You’ll hear the song, be able to identify what it is and download to the device.”

... The concept is being introduced in around 600 cafes in New York and Seattle only, though Starbucks, based in Seattle, and Apple, of Cupertino, Calif., plan to offer the service in other major cities late this year and in 2008.

Impulsive music lovers will have to sign onto the cafe’s Wi-Fi network to discover what song is playing over the Starbucks speakers. With a few taps, users can download the song onto their iPhones (which double as an iPod), or the new Apple iPod Touch with its wireless connection. The 99-cent charge will appear on their phone bills."

SpiralFrog to Offer Free Music Downloads

spiralfrog.gif

SpiralFrog.com, an ad-supported Web site that allows visitors to download music and videos free of charge, was scheduled to launch Monday in the U.S. and Canada after months of "beta" testing. ABC7 News reports.

"The music service, which has arranged to pay record companies a cut of its advertising revenue, aims to lure music fans who normally flock to online file-swapping networks to share and download music for free. The recording industry has sued thousands of computer users for doing so in recent years.

... At launch, the service was offering more than 800,000 tracks and 3,500 music videos for download. Much of that content comes by way of Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, the world's largest record company and the only major label that has licensed its music and videos to SpiralFrog.

Downloads cannot be burned to a CD, but they can be transferred to dozens of digital music players. The content, however, is not compatible with Apple's Macintosh computers or its market-leading iPod.

Users are allowed to copy their downloads to no more than two portable music players or compatible mobile phones at one time."
