This is a new one. Bicycle tones.

Cyclists routinely rely on bike computers to determine their spot speed and maintain average speed at a certain pace. However, constantly looking at a computer display is not practical and could be dangerous while cycling.

VeloTones, like ringtones or truetones, are MP3 sounds for mobile devices like cell phone or PDA. They allow cyclists to determine speed without the need to look at the display.

A set of MP3 sounds, comprising VeloTones, can be downloaded to a mobile phone running the SoundOfMotion bicycle computer application. The smart logic, coupled with an innovative bluetooth wheel sensor, plays VeloTones (TM) on a speaker or via bluetooth headset, based on a speed zone or acceleration of a cyclist.

SoundofMotion keeps cyclists safe, morphs phone into motorcycle

Ringtones take a new twist thanks to SoundofMotion.com, a new sound tone that turns your phone into a roaring motorcycle, able to rev up and down based on the speed and acceleration of your bicycle.

The application will run on "any Bluetooth- and Java-capable phone," and it interacts with a "wireless BT sensor" that gets mounted on one of your wheels.

LG's handset with a cappela sound effects

LG Electronics unveiled a mobile handset featuring a cappella sounds for bells and other sound effects yesterday. The model has adopted music sources sung by Sweden's Real Group - a professional a cappella group from Sweden, consisting of five members: soprano Margareta Jalkéus, alto Katarina Henryson, tenor Anders Edenroth, baritone Peder Karlsson, and bass Anders Jalkéus.

Ford Mustang rocks your phone

Ford rolled out a new, well, treat for Mustang fans today - cell phone ringtones, reports Autoblog.

"One of the available ringtones is "The Star Spangled Banner," played with Mustang exhaust tones.

Another downloadable ringtone is the sound of the car's exhaust as it runs through the gears.

AME info reports that Infinity recently announced that it will be offering FX and G Sedan and Coupe ringtones on its website free of charge.

Flushing sounds cover up bathroom noises

I missed this the other day on Engadget, but picked it up this morning on mocoblog. It's an amusing post on the “Shinobu-chan” ringer from Japan's “Scoop Music”, which uh, "enables women to cover up embarrassing sounds made in the bathroom".

"Assuming your handset is powerful enough, the Shinobu-chan ringer can make “flushing sounds” of up to 100 decibels for as long as 32 seconds. According to Scoop Music, “some women flush two or even three times to cover up embarrassing sounds made while on the can.”

Business Week reports on the less refined spectrum of the ringtone business, where bodily functions (vomiting, burping, farting) are popular and where sounds that jar your nerves (police siren, car revving up) are hot.

To capitalize on this niche trend which appeals mostly to teenagers, Bonus Mobile has launched a dedicated service, available to subscribers of T-Mobile and Cingular at rudetones.com.

Puke Ringtones - there is such a thing

I saw this press release and initially thought it was something else, the kind of soundtones that might appeal to a very young audience who also appreciates ringtones which mimick flatulence.

According to the press release:

Providing the digital age with the latest polyphonic mobile phone ringtones, mobile logos, java games Pukkaringtones celebrates its launch.

The website and service which look very good, actually spell it out in two words: Pukka Ringtones and "pukka" is actually a great word. According to the freedictionary, it means: "absolutely first class and genuine; "pukka sahib"; "pukka quarters with a swarm of servants".

pukkaringtones in one word is not such a good name I don't think, I wouldn't spell it out like that.

This led to a Google Search of course for "puke ringtones". Amazing what comes up (33,000 answers). Here's my selection:

Tennis action soundtones by women tennis stars

Today, and in time for the Telecom Italia Masters in Rome, Sony Ericsson is launching a series of innovative, tennis-related interactive services connected to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, reports Esato.

At the heart of these services is a new website, Girls on Tour, offering the chance to see behind-the-scenes shots and footage of the glamour and action of women's tennis and, of great interest to this column, the first ever personally recorded ringtones from the game's top players.

"pedorap" - A rapper's version of the Whoopie cushion ringtone

In september 2003, Wired wrote an article on the ringtone industry with the catchy title "Whoopie-Cushion Ring Tones Big Biz - where a spokeswoman from a Verizon Wireless ring tone provider claimed that "their very young audience loved ... stuff like bodily functions".

Well now, a Spanish ringtone provider is taking the genre one step further, offering a rappers version, "pedorap", the monkey rappers' fart ringtone. Cick here and select "pedorap" to listen. Click here for video.

The mobile phone that was the talk of blogosphere yesterday, the LG M4300 shaped like a car, has an interesting (and obvious) featured missed out by most; it comes with a "car starting engine ringtone, to give users more speedy vibe", according to Mobilemag.
And if users want more sports car like feeling from the phones, they can set car starting sound played when opening or closing the folder or put images of luxury sports cars on front screen thanks to “Fun” menu, according to Telecoms Korea.

Ron Jeremy launches groantones

Ron Jeremy, the "world's most famous adult entertainment star", has launched RJ Mobile, an adult entertainment site, where he will "recommend his favourite all-time scenes from his and his friends' personal libraries" for users to download.

There'll also be groantones, wallpapers, and text flirting (SMS conversations from a selection of female characters).

Besides, "RJ mobile subscribers will be charged £1.50 for each week that they remain with the service. This charge will allow the downloading of any single piece of content plus a personal photo blogging account. Additional videos, wallpapers, Groantones and text flirts will be charged at £1.50 per item. Forty new, 30-second clips will be available each week."

Competition in the moan tone arena for Wicked Wireless - who signed up Jenna Jameson, the world's best known sex icon, just a couple of months ago to to provide Latin American cell phone users with "moantones" and other steamy content.

Now wireless content company Brickhouse Mobile is saying that under an agreement with New Frontier, it would begin offering ring tones for mobile phone users featuring porn stars. [via Reuters] ]

"The company said it would also begin offering sexually explicit "wallpaper" for cell phone screens and adult videos for download on mobile phones under its brand The Erotic Network, the television subsidiary of New Frontier Media Inc."

Slamtones: the next big revenue opportunity

Mark Frauenfelder for TheFeature.com, links to an excellent article that originally appeared in the LA Times about nostalgic sounds that are disappearing as consumer technology marches forward:

"The emotional power of vintage sounds might explain the popularity of cell-phone ring tones that mimic rotary telephone bells. “It's one of the biggest ring tones we sell,” said Tom Valentino, president of Valentino Production Music, the nation's oldest sound-effects warehouse. In a similar vein, slot machines that pay out vouchers instead of cash often play a recording of cascading coins because research found customers missed the jackpot noise."

"The article also laments the fact that you can no longer get that satisfying sound of slamming a phone down on the hook when you angrily end a call. Now, here's a real opportunity for carriers: slamtones. I'm serious, says Frauenfelder. People would pay for a service that lets them transmit a slam sound to the person they are talking to on a mobile. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't already available."

I thought I would help and see if I could find a slamtone ringtone somewhere. I haven't so far, but I did come up with this. Someone else thinks this is a business opportunity too.

And elsewhere around the Web, BlueSkyFrog has some "sound effect ringtones", including "psycho" (very scary), school beel, hands clapping and an old phone ring. On Midiringtones you will find the sound of a European phone ringing, an antique cash register, an antique alarm clock or what is sure to cause some confusion, a ringtone that sounds a like a busy signal.

Morse Code Ringtones on Cellular Phones

Peter Dougherty for ham radio on the net explains how to customize a cell phone to send Morse Code ringtones.

"First, you need a data connection from your PC to the phone and three pieces of software. Then you need to download a freeware program called WinMorse 2 to generate WAV files, then convert them to an MP3 format. Finally, you have to upload the MP3 files to the phone using BitPim version 0.7.23."

I have a much better idea, just download the SOS distress signal from Thomas & Craigghead's dot-store (UK mobile users only).

BlueSkyFrog to Offer True Tones Downunder

Australian mobile content retailer BlueSkyFrog has signed an agreement with Sony Music to provide True Tones, reports Mike Grenville for 160characters.org.

Firm Launches Celebrity Greeting, Crank Call Services

Nextones.com has announced the launch of Celebrity Greetings and Crank Calls voice message services, reports Wireless Week.

Nextones.com says consumers can send 'Crank Calls or Celebrity Greetings' from the Nextones website, to their friends or family, or customize their phones with voicemail introductions from celebrities such as Enrique Inglesias, Eduardo Verastegui and impersonations from 'Saturday Night Live' cast member Darrell Hammond.

Old Fashion Phone Ring ... and "Human" Sounds

I've been looking all over for this, the sound of an old fashion phone ring for a cell phone, which a friend said he had heard in a movie line, and it really made quite an impression. Well here it is on MidiRingTones.

There are even several rings to chose from. Click and listen! Also of note, the sound of a European phone ringing, an antique cash register and an antique alarm clock.

Loudeye Launches Sound Effects Catalog of Rich Media Ringtones

Loudeye Corp., a leading provider of services for the management, promotion and distribution of digital media, has announced a sound effects rich media ringtone catalog including more than 300 CDs and over 50,000 sounds. Sound effects include everything from human and animal noises, military effects, cartoon sounds, and sirens, to old-fashioned telephone rings.

Content in the catalog was licensed to Loudeye from New York-based
Valentino Production Music & Sound Effects Library, publisher of more than 70,000 sound effects for the TV and feature film industries, according to a company press release.

This is the second time Valentino Production has been mentioned in Ringtonia, recently with an entry entitled World famous speech excerpts from J.F.K., Nixon, Reagan, Lou Gehrig and others, as ringtones.

Different Sounds

As my sister complained that her new Nokia picture phone did not have a single ringtone which sounded simply like a phone ringing as an option in her handset, I searched the web for a website suggesting such a thing. A hard thing to find, but this one caught my eye, not so much for the couple of ringing tones it offers, but for it's original catalogue. Called Different Sounds, it offers, well, exactly that. Take your pick: Bubble, electric typewriter, fax tone, hmmm, immediate car break, mobile interference, police siren and a personal favorite, ice cream cart coming.

Y!Singapore Mobile has a "sound" category in it's ringtone catalogue, where subscribers can choose to download the sound of a giggling baby, laughter, the click of a camera, a frog or a fox jumping (sounding like special effects in a cartoon), or a gun shot (!). That should get attention.
