Canada. Ringtones now qualify for 'gold' and 'platinum' status

"The first awards were announced on Tuesday, with 43 tunes certified as platinum and 17 noted as gold.

As a point of comparison, unit sales of 50,000 of a CD or vinyl album are needed for an album to be deemed gold, with 100,000 required for platinum."

What Makes a Ringtone Popular?

hdr_logo.gif Billboard Magazine has a list each week of hot ringtones. The songs range from hip hop to latin to rock.

Mancini's "Pink Panther" has been on the top 40 ringtone list for more than two years, for example. And artist Koji Kondo has been on the charts for 162 weeks with the Super Mario Brothers theme.

So what makes a ringtone popular? A song with a great hook or an instrumental?

Tim Page, the music critic for the Washington Post, talks about some of this week's Billboard picks with Robert Siegel and Melissa Block.

RIAA Certifies Ringtones as Gold, Platinum

mastertone event 1.jpg Rapper Rick Rosss received a plaque bearing a golden cell phone Wednesday when music industry officials honored 128 songs as the first batch of gold and platinum ringtones. Fox News reports.

"The ring tones are just another gateway to connecting with the kids and the fans," said Ross, whose award sported a shiny cell phone rather than the usual gold album. "That's just the next level."

Ross, whose first album comes out later this year, was cited for his best-selling single "Hustlin'."< He was joined in the ring(tone) of honor by big-name acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, 50 Cent, Kanye West and others.

Billboard to chart ringtones

Music market tracker Billboard will start publishing a chart ranking the best-selling master ringtones, audio snippets derived from original studio recordings and used to customize mobile phones, writes CNN News.

The chart, dubbed Hot MasterTones, will be based on data compiled by Nielsen Mobile and represent the top 20 best-selling master ringtones for the week. Included in the chart will be the song title, artist, previous week's ranking and number of weeks on the chart.

The weekly publication began publishing a chart for monophonic and polyphonic ringtones -- song samples based on synthesized versions of recordings -- in 2004. But since then, master ringtones have become an increasingly important slice of recording industry sales, particularly in the United States.

The U.S. ringtone market is expected to exceed $600 million in sales this year, up from $500 million last year, according to BMI. Billboard estimates global ringtone sales racked up $4.4 billion in 2005, up from $3.7 billion the previous year. Much of that growth was due to sales of master ringtones, according to the magazine.

Football stadium ringtone chart goes live

sml_logo.gif netimperative reports one one of the most innovative ringtones ideas, I've come across. A new ringtone and download chart that is exclusive to football stadiums across the UK - developed by TV network Match Day Media.

"The Stadium Music League chart will be presented by Radio 1 DJ Sara Cox, and will provide each stadium with a unique chart, where positions are controlled entirely by participating fans at the game.

Votes are cast by text message, costing £3.50 ($6.10), including the ringtone and a pre-paid link to download the full song at home via mdmtv.com, powered by online TuneTribe.com.

Every vote will then count as a sale and be eligible for inclusion in the UK Official National Chart.

Match Day Media said the service provides the music industry with a platform to tap into the football world and be able to connect directly with the 1.4 million fans gathering at football stadiums every month around the country.

The Stadium Music League will be broadcast across a network of top football stadiums, via state of the art plasma screens, screening MDM.TV, which shows a live match feed, half time highlights and football news."

Crazy Frog hops off the number one spot

story355019.160x120.jpg That annoying Crazy Frog has finally been knocked off the number one spot after four weeks at the top.

"Moving down to the number two spot, the frog has given way to allow 2Pac and Elton John to go straight in at number one with Ghetto Gospel, by rapper 2PAC, who died in Las Vegas in 1996, killed by unknown assailants.

[via ITV.com]

I'm not sure what this says about the music industry. First a Frog Ringtone is on top of the charts for 4 weeks straight, only to lose it's place to a dead rapper's single (?).

To understand, read MTV: Presley and 2Pac have become legendary in their respective genres, inspiring conferences and tributes — and enthralling fans with their music years after their deaths. Other rappers, have also had material released posthumously, but none of it has enjoyed the critical and commercial success of Tupac's (2Pac') posthumous releases.

Ring-a-ding bling-bling

test_logoA.gif "My Boo" topped Billboard magazine's chart of hot ringtones during the chart's first three weeks of existence. This week, Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot" took over the top position, reports The Tenessean

Geoff Mayfield, Billboard's director of charts, says what he calls the ''36 to dead'' crowd hasn't caught onto the craze yet, but that up to 97,000 people — most of them young — are paying between 99 cents and $2.99 to download songs each week.

Sprint is now marketing BlingTones, which are hip-hop beats created by leading producers for use solely as cell phone ringers.

The top-selling ringtone tends to sell more than three times as much in one week as the No. 1 seller on Billboard's Hot Digital Tracks chart. In other words, three times as many people are paying up to $2.99 for a snippet of a replica of a song's melody than are paying 99 cents to download an entire song with full dynamic sound.

''It's a personalized thing, and I think it's going to grow,'' Bihlman says. ''This whole mass of humanity is trying to do anything to differentiate themselves.''

Rap, hip-hop most popular SMS downloads

Rap and hip-hop music make up the most popular downloads of short message service users, according to a new survey from ForceNine Consulting and SMS.ac Inc, reports RCRNews

"The survey showed 25 percent of more than 26,000 global respondents said they were most likely to download rap and hip-hop as ring tones. For the United States alone, rap and hip-hop music were most likely to be downloaded by nearly 35 percent of respondents".

“While rap and hip-hop topped the list both in the United States and around the world, we did see some important cultural differences in the survey,” explained Andrew Roscoe, a partner at ForceNine Consulting. “Americans were more likely to download TV and mobile themes as ring tones, while the market for classical ring tones, while relatively small, was more significant outside the U.S.”

Ringtone POP Chart - WSJ

Something I picked up from the WSJ, though the article doesn't say for which market(s) this pop chart applies to or who conducted the survey:

"It looks like 50 Cent is finally facing some competition in the ringtone arena. The superstar rapper maintained his dominance in September, accounting for the top four music downloads.

But Jay-Z, who had only one song on the list in August, was right behind with three of the top 10 spots.

"Frontin," a Pharrell song featuring Jay-Z, jumped up to No. 6 from No. 36, while Beyonce's "Crazy in Love," which also features Jay-Z, climbed to No. 7 from No. 58.

Bone Crusher made the biggest splash. The Atlanta rapper's "Never Scared" shot up to No. 5 from No. 97 in August.

Once again, hip-hop dominated. For the second straight month, the genre provided all 10 songs on the list". -- by Josef Federman, 10/01/03
