September 30, 2008Samsung To Bundle Shazam Music Discovery App On Music Handsets
T-Mobile UK will be the first operator to offer the phones with Shazam's application integrated directly into its music service, Mobile Jukebox. [via Moco News] KTF Launches Money-Saving Ring-Back Tone ServiceA ring-back tone service that helps customers save money, while providing companies with a new advertisement channel is now available. KTF announced the launch of Save Ring service that gives customers discounts if they select advertisements as their mobile ring-back tones. "Using technology called screen access software, blind consumers will be able to turn on-screen information into braille or speech so that they can search the Internet using keyboard commands. Apple will also make a $250,000 contribution to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind to purchase the assistive software. Under the agreement, Apple will make iTunes U, a provider of educational content, fully accessible by Dec. 31, followed by the rest of iTunes and iTunes Store by June 30. Universal Music Group, the largest of the major recording companies, plans to launch a "Hulu-like" video portal, a source close to the company told CNET news. "The new venture would offer professionally produced music videos as well as other original programming that features the label's artists. The Killers, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, and Amy Winehouse are just a few of the company's acts. A Universal spokesman declined to comment. MySpace Music is free, and users get instant access to a vast library of songs. The site has inked deals to upload the catalogs of the four major labels, EMI, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. Throw in songs from the 5 million artists who already have pages on the site, and MySpace has a pretty good starter set. ... Sony Ericsson and its rival, Nokia, are launching services overseas this year (and later in the U.S.) that would give cellphone users access to the same vast music library, for free. The tunes would be linked to the cellular handsets, but even if you dropped your mobile carrier, you could keep the songs you downloaded." CERN's Large Hadron Collider rap video which has been a huge hit on YouTube has been made into a ringtone. FunMo have now released the official Hadron Particle Rap Ringtone. "A great way for physics fans to mark the unveiling of the LHC discovery machine that is attempting to usher in a new era of understanding about the Big Bang theory and the origins and evolution of the universe." File under wonderful. Lancaster, California has a musical road that has been pock marked with special grooves that sing out a tune. Made by Honda as part of an upcoming advertising campaign, the road plays "The William Tell Overture" and for best results the company advices you to drive over with a Honda Civic because the company says that the road was tuned specifically to the tires and wheelbase of a Civic. In the latest attempt to shore up sales of music on physical media, SanDisk Corp. and the four major music companies plan to announce Monday a new format called slotMusic. The WSJ reports. "SlotMusic is be introduced in mid-October at retail outlets including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Best Buy Co. Each unit is to contain an album, plus extras, on a compact memory card that can be played on mobile phones, PCs and some portable MP3 players. The cards are inserted into vacant slots on phones and other devices. (The slots are increasingly common on newer phones, but the placement of the slot depends on the phone model.) A phone named after Korean top musician Seo Tae-ji is coming out. KTF announced its plans to launch a music phone and a video phone made in collaboration with Seo next month, reports Digital Chosunilbo. "There have been phones named after celebrities, but this is the first time a star actually participated in the making of contents such as video clips, alarm tone, fonts, and ringtones. Seo composed the ringtones and the sound that comes out when turning the phone on and off and made an alarm tone featuring his voice. Images of Seo are also on display. The phone features unreleased clips of a music video of Seo’s new single “Bermuda Triangle.” Despite being sold as limited edition, the company expects sales of at least 30,000 units. " September 19, 2008Supreme Court Upholds Canadian Ringtone Royalty PaymentsCanada's Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal against a court case which requires ringtone sellers to make back-payments for ringtones sold between 2003-05. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) and two mobile operators had tried to appeal on a technical issue - but the Supreme Court decided not to hear the appeal. It suggested classical music fans were shy, while heavy metal aficionados were gentle and at ease with themselves. Professor North described the research as "significant" and "surprising". ... "There are obvious implications for the music industry who are are worried about declining CD sales. One of the most surprising things is the similarities between fans of classical music and heavy metal. They're both creative and at ease but not outgoing. The new Snow Patrol album, due out next month, is the first to offer a downloadable application for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch.
