Raising money for Telethon 2004

bruel_190.jpg During Friday and Saturday's marathon broadcast of Telethon 2004, to raise money for research to fight against genetic diseases, TV channel France 2 offered ringtones and logos as one more (good) way to bring in some money.

To the best of my knowledge, the very first campaign to raise money by offering a downloadable logo by SMS was in the summer of 2001, when Australian telecom company Telstra offered its clients a Red Nose logo, symbole of an awareness campaign regarding Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

For each logo Telstra donated $1.84 Australian (US$0.95) to SIDS Australia. Telstra customers donated about $10,000 Australian (US$5,200) to research.
