Ringtone titles censored

This is a first. A ringtone company has been forced to change adverts for its products by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) – after one complaint, according to Mobile Today UK.

"The complaint centred around an advert placed by Design Direct for its kooltones.com website in Sugar, a magazine aimed at teenage girls. Among ringtones listed were pop songs by 50 Cent called Pimp and another by Eamon called F**k It.

The complainant argued that the language used in the advert was, ‘offensive, irresponsible and unsuitable for a magazine with readers that included 11 year-olds', but Design Direct argued that the songs were familiar to consumers and had been featured on TV.

The ASA upheld the complaint, saying some wording was ‘unsuitable' for Sugar's youngest readers.

Design Direct agreed not to repeat the advert and to change the wording in its future adverts. "
