Phone vision: Early Pay Per View TV (Oct, 1947)

lrg_pay_per_view.jpg

Another gem from Modern Mechanix: “Phone vision”.

“Phone vision” developed by Zenith Radio Corporation, offers paying television audiences the cream of latest stage plays and movies. A combination home receiver brings in free programs as usual. Special features reach it partly by air, partly by phone line.

Blurred when viewed alone (above, right), the radio image becomes clearer (left) with key frequencies received by phone. “Admission charges” go on phone bill.

Walking Stick Becomes Camera Tripod

med_walking_stick_tripod.jpg Another good idea from the past from Modern Mechanix, a walking stick that turns into a camera tripod (1940).

Serving either as a cane for the strolling photographer, or as a tripod for the picture-making stroller, the combination accessory shown in the photographs at the left has just been introduced.

Made of telescoping steel sections hinged at the top, the three legs form a sturdy camera support when spread apart and extended. Collapsed and folded together, they form the shaft of a walking stick when the curved handle and a special tip are replaced.

The camera hidden in your fridge

0camcam.jpgMilkCam, a project by the Context Aware research group at MIT, "is an internet-enabled camera disguised as a milk container. It allows users with cell phones or PDAs, to remotely snap a picture of their refrigerator’s interior. People don’t upgrade their fridges frequently, making it difficult for new internet-enabled refrigerators to gain popularity. This type of technology is direct alternative to internet-enabled refrigerators that are almost prohibitive to acquire.

You could be walking down the aisle at a supermarket and dial-up your fridge from your cell phone to see if it is time for buying more orange juice, milk and fruit; saving you an extra trip to the mall."

Celebrate the moment. Don't photograph it

_41818422_nonphoto203.jpg An English photographer is urging the people of the world to take a day out and stop taking pictures, reports the BBC.

"Becca Bland has launched "non-photography day" - planned for 17 July - through a Website together with a sticker and flyposter campaign in various cities in England.

She's even suggesting a "non-photography police" - a dedicated group who would tell people about the day when they see them taking pictures on the street.

She explained that she wanted people to "put your camera down and appreciate the moment you are in". "Experience life in an unmediated fashion, without anything in front of your eyes. Live in the moment," she added. "

Video Booth for Mobile Phones

mysq3.gif MYSQ (My Style So Qute) is an interactive "video booth" for shooting 30-second movies that can be viewed on mobile phones.

The booth can accommodate up to three people so you can shoot Prikura style video clips with your friends. Inside the booth is a fluffy thing called a MYSQ ring – you wear it on your hand. A camera detects the movement of your MYSQ ring. Also, floor sensors detect your foot movement. So, the system can control video effects based on your (and your friends') hand/foot movement.

After a session is finished, the system processes the captured video and generates a movie file that can be viewed on mobile phones. When the movie file is ready, a QR code is displayed on the screen. Scan the QR code with your camera phone and then download the movie. You can of course send the downloaded movie to your friends, etc.

"News of what she had been doing got around. A crowd of about 50 people were waiting to see her last Friday with their camera phones ready to get a picture.

"A lot of workmen showed up because they are building some flats nearby. No-one knows who she is or why she is doing it and they're too stunned to watch where she goes afterwards".
