The American photographer Spencer Platt from the press bureau Getty Images is the winner of the prestigious international competition, World Press Photo 2006.

"The winning photo was taken on 15 August 2006, the first day of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, when thousands of Lebanese started returning to their homes.

The photo shows a group of young people touring a devastated district of the city in an open topped car and one of the passengers is sending a text message."

According to jury chair, Michele McNally, the photo has "the complexity and contradiction of real life, amidst chaos. This photograph makes you look beyond the obvious." [via Radio Netherlands]
