More Ads Hit Cellphone Screens

phone_ads.jpg The increasing use of cellphones for watching television, browsing the Web and sending photos and messages hasn't been lost on advertisers, reports the WSJ.

... "Advertisers have used cellphones in marketing campaigns before, but until recently, they have mostly used text messaging. Now that wireless networks have broadband-like speed and cellphones are equipped with faster processing chips, marketers have started to test ads similar to those run on the Internet and TV.

... Advertisers also are beginning to show interest in buying TV-like spots on cellphones. ... It costs just a few hundred thousand dollars for a cellphone ad to appear thousands of times over a three-month period. In contrast, an ad on a TV network can cost that much for one 30-second broadcast.

...Advertising on cellphones is still in its infancy in the U.S. and is at least a few years away from going mainstream, advertising-industry people say."
