Samsung, LG develop TV-friendly phones

lge_dvbh_flo_1.jpg Samsung and LG Electronics both said yesterday that they have developed mobile handsets that can be used with three of the world's four key media broadcasting standards for mobile phones, allowing phone user to watch TV shows, for example, or get video on demand, reports JoongAng Daily.

Samsung will unveil its Media FLO phone at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics show on Jan. 5. Media FLO refers to the wireless video broadcasting standard "Media Forward Link Only" developed by the U.S. chip-maker Qualcomm Inc.

LG Electronics Inc. said it would also showcase its DVB-H and Media FLO phones at the same show. DVB-H, or digital video broadcasting-handheld, developed by Nokia Corp., supports the wireless communications frameworks GSM, GPRS and WCDMA. The showcase is expected to help the company make inroads into the European and American markets, where mobile broadcasting services are poised to begin this year.
Currently, there are four mobile broadcasting standards used around the world ― Korea's digital multimedia broadcasting, the American Media FLO, Europe's DVB-H and Japan's ISDB-T.
