360-Degree Camera System For Remote Monitoring

Image technology firm Eizoh has developed a camera system that can display remote images on NTT DoCoMo Foma cell phone using the handset's videophone function.

When a user inserts the Foma's data card into the system and makes a videophone call to the card's phone number, the system's built-in camera starts sending images and audio transmissions to the handset. The system, equipped with a small camera of about 300,000 pixels, simultaneously photographs objects in all directions and converts the 360-degree images into flat images using image processing software for transmission to the cell phone.

The pilot system is 30cm high with a diameter of 13cm and weighs about 1kg. The system is expected to find applications in home/store security systems and to be used to view children in day care centers. Eizoh hopes to commercialize the system by 2006.
