RFID in cows' stomacs

cowtalk.gif Animal Industry Lab in the Japanese city of Takayama developed a healthcare system for cows, reports RFID in Japan.

"A relatively heavy RFID tag (15mm in diameter x 90mm; 100g) is simply put in a cow's stomach. The tag has a temperature sensor for monitoring cows' body temperature. So, when a cow steps on scales, the sytem automatically capture the cow's body temperature as well as weight.

The tag/system could be extended so as to additionally monitor cardiopulmonary, respiratory rate and childbirth information and to track cows with unique serial numbers (for consumers' peace of mind in the age of BSE and other animal diseases)".
