Cmode2 and 2D barcodes

RFID in Japan reports on Cmode, a vending machine with built-in computer, display, speaker and printer.

"Consumers can buy cokes by showing 2D barcodes displayed on their mobile phones to Cmode vending machines. In addition subscribers can make cashless purchases of standby screens, ringing melodies, and other i-appli and i-mode content. They can also print out hard copies of coupons and other items."

"Currently, there are 1,700 Cmode vending machines installed nationwide. Cmode2 is the next generation Cmode and it accepts RFID-chipped wallet phones as well as existing 2D-barcode-based payment.

Coca-cola Japan plans to deploy about 1,000 Cmode2 vending machines in Japan by the end of this year."
