Digital Camera, Camera Phone Competition Heating Up

200410060008_00.jpg Competition is heating up over pixel counts between digital cameras and camera phones. Five million pixel models are quickly gaining popularity among digital cameras, while 3 million pixel models are doing the same for camera phones, reports Digital Chosunilbo.

"Eight million pixel compact models are being introduced to consumers, with the most popular models finding themselves on bestsellers lists. Olympus Korea has launched its 8 million pixel C-8080WZ.

Camera phones are not far behind.

It has only been a year since the introduction of megapixel phones -- camera phones with one million pixels and up.

The evolution of camera phones, however, is on high speed. A 3 million pixel model was introduced to consumers only a month after the first 2 million model hit the market in June.

Because 2 million pixel photos are good enough to print, more and more people are using megapixel phones as an alternative to digital cameras. Indeed, more than a million megapixel camera phones were sold by July.

Samsung Electronics has launched a 3 million optical 3x zoom camera phone that looks like a digital camera. LG Electronics introduced the 3 million pixel model, which features a MegaShutter to block unwanted light and enhance image quality. The 3 million pixel phone from Pantech & Curitel comes with a mechanical shutter that enables users to get clearer images."

And according to aprevious report, Samsung is to bring out 5-megapixel phone by the end of this year.
