No Need for 3G?
According to an article in Silicon.com, BT has developed a method of streaming video across GPRS networks, called Fastnets.
BT is already in discussion with a number of GPRS operators, who it says are interested in using Fastnets commercially. If deals are struck, it could be bad news for 3G.
Streaming video is perceived as one of the key applications that will tempt users onto third-generation networks. If GPRS can support streaming video well enough, people could resist such a move.
For more on this subject, there is also an article entitled "You don 't need a 3G phone to get video" published April 19 in New Scientist, reporting on 5 companies Microsoft, NTL, Tandberg, Texas Instruments and RadioScape showing off in demos in Las Vegas, how a standard 2G phone network will happily relay video to your mobile from digital radio transmitters.
