Picture Phones Surpass Sales of Digital Cameras

Though it wasn't predicted until 2004, global sales of cellphones with built-in cameras surpassed sales of conventional digital cameras in the first half of 2003, a milestone in the mobile-phone industry.

Driven by surging demand in Japan and South Korea, mobile-phone makers shipped 25 million handsets with built-in cameras world-wide in the first half of the year, compared with four million in the year-earlier period, according to Anglo-U.S. research firm Strategy Analytics, reports the WSJ.
